PJB Mechanical can help you beat the heat this summer with a system designed to cool just one room in your home, or your entire home. And, we can integrate an indoor air quality filtration system into your cooling system to help reduce the effects of allergens and irritants, such as pollen, dust, and wildfire smoke.
Our team has expertise in both older models of cooling systems, and new and emerging technologies. We install, repair and service all major makes and models of:
- Central air conditioning systems
- Central heat pumps
- Ductless mini-splits
- Ducted mini-splits
- Indoor air quality systems
Spring and early summer are a great time to prepare your home for the summer heat waves that are on their way. When the weather hits extreme highs (or lows), our team gets busy with calls for repairs and installations, and the wait times for service can be long.
Heat pumps and dual fuel systems offer a cool, energy-efficient solution
The air conditioning and cooling industry has transformed over the years, with advancements in technology that can save you money on your utility bill and reduce your environmental impact—while helping you stay cool in even the hottest weather.
Electric heat pumps work by transferring heat from one space to another, rather than generating it. In the winter, they transfer warm outdoor air into the home, and in the summer they act as an air conditioning system, transferring warm indoor air outside. Metro Vancouver is an ideal climate zone for heat pumps—they can reach up to 90% efficiency, provide year-round comfort, and have an average life span of 15 to 20 years, depending on maintenance, usage, and environmental factors.
Central heat pumps use the same ductwork as your furnace system to circulate cool or warm air throughout your entire home, while ductless heat pumps can be installed to cool or heat a single room, or multiple rooms, depending on whether they are a split or multi-split system.
If you’re considering a furnace replacement, consider a dual fuel system, which offers the best of both worlds—an electric heat pump for year-round cooling and heating, combined with a high-efficiency gas furnace for consistently comfortable, cost-effective heating during the coldest weather. The two components are connected by a thermostat that switches between systems to provide the most efficient heating or cooling solution.

A South Delta family keeps their cool with a made-in-Canada solution
This May, our crew was installing a dual fuel system in a South Delta home, when a friendly neighbour spotted our vans and asked our client and crew what we were working on. When we told him about the install, he expressed an interest in learning more.
Like most of the houses in his neighbourhood, his home was 40-50 years old. The furnace was original to the home and was long past its life expectancy. It worked, but required expensive repairs, and the old technology was so inefficient it was literally like throwing money out the window. He knew it was time for a replacement.
PJB toured the home, discussed the neighbour’s needs, and advised him what his options were. We recommended a dual fuel system that would solve his heating problems—with the added bonus of summertime cooling—plus a rebate from FortisBC that would help to lower the cost of the install. It was a win on all fronts!
Heat pumps are incredibly efficient, and new gas furnaces are over 96% efficient, (the neighbour’s existing furnace would have been lucky to achieve 60%). By switching to a high-efficiency system, he was about to see a substantial savings on his energy bills.
With the current focus on Canadian-made products, we were also pleased to be able to recommend and install a made-in-Canada solution. Napoleon is a family-owned company based in Barrie, Ontario. Their dual fuel system uses a Smart Thermostat that automatically switches the heating source between the heat pump and the gas furnace during cold weather, depending on the least expensive mode of operation. The system considers a variety of factors:
- Gas and electricity prices
- Time of use
- Outdoor air temperature
- Efficiency of the heat pump vs efficiency of the gas furnace
- Heating requirements of the home
The Napolean heat pump we installed will cool the neighbour’s home in the summer, and heat it for most of the year, automatically switching to the high-efficiency gas furnace when it makes better economic sense.
As you can see in the “before and after” photos, retrofits involve some cutting for line-sets and venting, but for PJB’s team of experienced professionals, it’s the type of logistical problem we solve with ease.

The end result of the install has been a very happy customer who now has a beautiful new system of heating and cooling in his home, with a minimum of fuss, and substantial rebates that have helped to smooth the transition.
